Lhanag Tso Lake

Beautiful Lhanag Tso Lake, the Ghost LakeLhanag-tso Lake appears dark blue and is very salty. There are no plants, no cattle or sheep around the lake. Everything seems lifeless. That’s why the lake is called the “Ghost Lake”.

It is said that Lhanag-tso Lake and Mapam Yumco Lake used to be one lake. Later the middle part of the lake descended, and a small long hill divided the lake into two lakes, which are Mapam Yumco Lake and Lhanag-tso Lake. A long water channel, Ganpa Chu, connects the two lakes. Although the channel is usually dry, the local people believe that one day, water in Mapam Yumco Lake will flow into Lhanag-tso Lake and a red fish will swim into the lake. Then the water in the Ghost Lake will be as sweet as that in Mapam Yumco Lake.

Location:

It is located 10 km west to Mapam Yumco Lake, with an altitude of 4,573 meters and an area of 70 sq. km.

Feature:

It is said that there are billows three feet high in the lake even if there is no wind. Actually, the natural scenery is very spectacular here. The dark red hills along the lake are very beautiful. The pebble beach looks like a white silver belt inlayed beside the lake. In addition, people often sense a weird feeling at the lakeside: there are neither people nor animals around the lake. It is just so quiet, so hollow, like the edge of the universe.

Tips:

The local guides will tell the tourists to be sincere and respectful before they go to visit the Ghost Lake. Otherwise there will happen some inauspicious things. Just follow the guides’ suggestions.
