Native products in Chamdo include Bangxiang, Chinese caterpillar fungus (cordy -ceps sinensis), the bulb of fritillary (fritillaia thunbergii), rhizoma anemarrhenae, Flos Saussureae, Walnut, Tibetan knife, Coloured fish, bream, and highland livestock products.

Ethnic handicraft industry in Chamdo has a long history. The crafts are diverse, and the manufacture technique is exquisite with distinctive features, which plays an important role in the region of Kang. Especially in Gama, 120 kilometers away from the town, handicraft industry stands out in this area. It has become a historical developing center of national handicraft industry in Chamdo Prefecture. In ancient times, Garma was named “Artisan country”. According to the historical data, a native artist, Dui ricang, designed the Garma Monastery built in 1185. So the history of painting in this area can date back to seven or eight hundred years ago. During the middle of the 16th century, the three generations of Zhaxi founded a unique painting sect called “the Garshoge”. By absorbing the skills of scenery painting, “the Maining”, and “the Maisa” branches, it became one of the important sects of “Tangkas” painting in Tibet. The Garshoge branch is well-known for painting flowers, plants, trees, mountain, waterfall, and god Buddha portrait with vigorous and smooth lines, exquisite clothes and gorgeous color.

In addition, in Chamdo area exists Chaiduiwengdagang, forming in the late 14th century. It focuses on painting all kinds of images of Buddha consecrated in Monasteries. The wisdom of the artisans of Tibetan, Han Nationality, Mongolian nationality, Naxi nationality, Nepalese nationality and Indian nationality is the treasure-house of national handicraft industry art products, gradually laying the foundation of a Chamdo nation handicraft industry with an unique national style.

Now, there is still a group of artisans, keen-witted and capable of carving and draw- dyeing. Their hard-work and wisdom have a good reputation in neighboring districts such as Qin hai province, Ganzi, Aba area in Sichuan province, and Diqing in Yunnan Province.
